The New Train Room: A Modicum Of Progress

Things aren’t progressing quite as fast as I would like, but progress is being made nonetheless. The last two weekends were spent painting the ceiling panels and cross beams (as well as doing a few other, unrelated things around the house – cracked drain pipes don’t wait). The intent was to put the ceiling in next, but while putting up the first panel, we realised that the wall panels were just a few millimetres longer than the height of the wall frames, and would therefore be difficult to mount with the ceiling in place.

So the plan had to be changed, and we started putting up the wall panels. The storage area needed to be done first, and the panels had to be cut to size for that. Drywall or plasterboard, commonly known in Australia as Gyprock, is easy to use if everything is level and square, but if you have even a few deviations, things get interesting.

Cutting these panels to size is a messy and time-consuming affair, if you don’t want to risk cracking or breaking them in the wrong place. Still, we got fairly far in one and a half days. The entire storage area is walled in, and almost half the main area is done. Another two weekends should see the inside walls and ceilings finished. Then it’s the outer wall cladding – we’ll use different material for that – the front door and more painting, before the bench work can be started.
