Every now and then, I’ll post my actual train sightings, especially if they relate to what is running on our layout.

On this day, I managed to spot and record the same train twice. A coal train heading towards the port of Brisbane, pulled by two QR Class 2300 locos made its way through nearby localities Lanefield and Rosewood. The 2300 class is almost exclusively used for coal freight on the West Moreton system, which connects Brisbane with Toowoomba and towns further west.

The double spot was possible because the trains usually have to stop just outside Rosewood, which is the westernmost terminus of the Brisbane commuter train network. The freight trains share a large part of the network with the commuter trains and thus have to slot in with those. If the train had kept going at speed, it would be impossible to beat it into Rosewood.
